What is an Arcana Calculator?
An Arcana Calculator uses your date of birth and a numerology-style reduction method to match your birthday with one or more cards from the Major Arcana of Tarot. These are commonly called a Tarot birth card, Major Arcana birth card, Personality Card, or Soul Card depending on the calculation tradition being used.
A standard Tarot deck has 22 Major Arcana cards, usually numbered from 0 through 21. Birth-card systems convert a birth date into one or more numbers that correspond with those cards. How to calculate your Arcana from your birth date
One widely used birth-card method breaks the birthday into four two-digit groups and adds them together:
MM + DD + first 2 digits of year + last 2 digits of year
For example, a birth date of June 11, 1992 starts as

There is no single universal Tarot birth-card formula. Different Tarot teachers and calculators may preserve different stages of the reduction. This calculator includes three common approaches so the method is visible instead of hidden.
- Birth Card Pair: uses two-digit birthday groups and keeps a paired higher Major Arcana plus its reduced root. A 19 result follows the special 19 → 10 → 1 sequence.
- Personality & Soul: adds month + day + the full birth year, reduces the result to 22 or less, then derives the Soul Card. In this approach, 22 may be kept as The Fool (22/0) before reducing to 4 / The Emperor.
- Single Major Arcana: adds every digit in the birth date and continues reducing until one Major Arcana number remains.
What are the Personality Card and Soul Card?
In the Mary K. Greer-style system, the Personality Card is the Major Arcana number reached after reducing the month, day, and full birth year to 22 or less. The Soul Card is the further numerical reduction of that Personality Card. If the Personality number is already a single digit, the same card can function as both.
The 19 path is unusual because it passes through three Major Arcana numbers: 19 The Sun → 10 Wheel of Fortune → 1 The Magician. The 22 path is also handled specially in the Greer method, where 22/0 The Fool can be retained before reducing to 4 The Emperor.
Why can two Arcana calculators give different results?
Differences usually come from the calculation method, not from a math error. One calculator may reduce the entire birth date to a single digit, while another preserves a two-card or three-card sequence. Some systems also treat 22 as The Fool, while others reduce 22 immediately.
Deck numbering can also change the card attached to numbers 8 and 11. The popular Rider-Waite-Smith order uses Strength as VIII and Justice as XI. Traditional Tarot de Marseille numbering uses Justice as VIII and Strength as XI. The number is the same, but the card name at that position changes.
Major Arcana birth card vs. Life Path number
Tarot birth-card calculations and numerology Life Path calculations can look similar because both reduce a date of birth with addition. They are not automatically the same system. A Life Path calculation often aims for a single numerology number, while Tarot birth-card methods may intentionally preserve a number from 10 through 21 so it can map directly to a Major Arcana card.
