How the eBay fee calculator works

This eBay fee calculator estimates the selling fees for a U.S.-registered seller on a single-item order. eBay describes the final value fee as a category-based percentage of the total amount of the sale, plus a fixed per-order amount. For most non-Store sellers and Starter Store sellers, the common rate is 13.6% on the first $7,500 and 2.35% on the portion above $7,500. Basic, Premium, Anchor, and Enterprise Store subscribers can receive lower category rates, such as 12.7% for many categories on the first $2,500.
The exact category matters. Books and selected media, trading cards, coins, watches, handbags, athletic shoes, electronics, musical instruments, video games, and eBay Motors categories can use different fee schedules. That is why this calculator includes category presets and a custom-rate option.

What is included in eBay's final value fee base?

According to eBay, the total amount of the sale can include the item price, handling charges, shipping collected from the buyer, sales tax, and other applicable amounts. This creates an important difference between fee base and seller revenue: sales tax can increase the fee calculation even though the tax itself is not money you keep.
  • Seller revenue: item price + buyer-paid shipping + handling/other seller revenue
  • Estimated sales tax: seller revenue × sales-tax rate entered above
  • Final value fee base: seller revenue + estimated sales tax
  • Profit: seller revenue − eBay fees − item cost − shipping cost − other seller costs

Per-order fee: $0.30 or $0.40

eBay's U.S. selling-fee page states that the fixed per-order portion is $0.30 for orders of $10 or lessand $0.40 for orders over $10. Selected athletic-shoe sales at $150 or more use a special final value fee rule where the per-order fee is not charged.

Promoted Listings - General fee

If a sale is attributed to a Promoted Listings General campaign, eBay charges the ad rate as a percentage of the item's total sale amount. The calculator lets you enter that ad rate separately so you can compare organic sales with promoted sales and see how advertising changes the actual profit margin.

International fee for U.S. sellers

For a U.S.-registered seller, eBay currently lists a 1.65% international fee when the fee applies. eBay also states that eligible sales shipped through eBay International Shipping are not charged this international fee. Turn the option on only when the specific order is subject to the fee.

Top Rated Plus discount

Qualifying Top Rated Plus listings may receive a 10% discount on the final value fee percentage portion. The fixed per-order amount is not discounted. Eligibility depends on eBay seller standards and listing requirements, so the checkbox should only be used when the listing actually qualifies.

Break-even price and target margin

A basic seller fee calculator tells you what eBay charges after you already know the selling price. This calculator also works backward. The break-even item price is the approximate item price where profit reaches $0 after your eBay fees and seller costs. The target-margin item price estimates the price needed to reach the margin you entered while holding the other assumptions constant.

Example: $100 item in a common non-Store category

Suppose an item sells for $100 with free shipping, a 7% estimated sales-tax rate, no promoted-listing fee, and no international fee. The estimated final value fee base is $107 because sales tax is included in the fee base. With a 13.6% category rate, the percentage portion is about $14.55, plus the $0.40 per-order fee. Your actual profit then depends on the item's cost, shipping label, packaging, advertising, and any other fees.

Important limitations

  • eBay can change rates, thresholds, category definitions, promotions, and seller-program rules. Always compare an important transaction with the fee details shown in Seller Hub.
  • This calculator focuses on common U.S. final value fees. It does not automatically model every insertion fee, listing upgrade, dispute fee, seller-performance surcharge, currency-conversion charge, regulatory fee, tax on eBay services, or special program.
  • Vehicle listings, real estate, Classified Ads, and other special listing formats can use fee structures that do not follow the standard item final value fee model and should not be estimated with a generic preset.
  • Sales-tax treatment varies by jurisdiction and item. The entered sales-tax rate is an estimate for the fee base, not tax advice and not a calculation of your tax liability.

Fee presets were reviewed against eBay's U.S. help pages in August 2026. For the latest official rules, see eBay Selling fees, eBay Store selling fees, and Promoted Listings General campaign strategy.

Frequently asked questions

  • Q. What percentage does eBay take from a sale?
    A. There is no single rate for every item. For many U.S. non-Store and Starter Store categories, the final value fee is 13.6% on the first $7,500 plus 2.35% on the portion over $7,500, plus the fixed per-order fee. Store subscribers and special categories can have different rates.
  • Q. Does eBay charge the final value fee on shipping?
    A. Usually, buyer-paid shipping is included in the total amount of the sale used for the final value fee, although eBay lists some shipping-specific exceptions. Enter the shipping amount the buyer pays in the calculator.
  • Q. Does eBay charge fees on sales tax?
    A. eBay states that sales tax is included in the total amount of the sale used to calculate the final value fee. That is why the calculator includes a sales-tax-rate field even though the tax is not counted as seller revenue.
  • Q. Is there still a separate PayPal fee?
    A. eBay's current selling-fee documentation says the final value fee is charged when the item sells and that sellers do not need to account for a separate third-party payment-processing fee in that standard eBay transaction fee.
  • Q. How do I calculate my actual eBay profit?
    A. Start with the item price, shipping collected, and other seller revenue. Subtract the final value fee, per-order fee, advertising and international fees when applicable, then subtract product cost, shipping label, packaging, and other per-order costs. This calculator performs that full profit calculation for you.
  • Q. Why is my Seller Hub fee different from this estimate?
    A. Your exact eBay category, subcategory, Store level, seller status, buyer location, tax, listing upgrades, advertising attribution, promotions, fee credits, and special programs can change the final charge. Seller Hub's transaction fee details should be treated as the source of truth for a completed order.
